Area Converter
Area conversions follow the same factors as length, squared — and that squaring is where nearly every wrong answer comes from. This converter handles metric, imperial and land units.
Formula
square metres = value × (linear factor)²
- The linear factor is squared: 1 m = 3.2808 ft, so 1 m² = 10.764 ft²
1,500 ft² in m²: 1,500 × 0.092903 = 139.4 m²
Square the Factor, Always
The single most common error in area work is reusing a linear factor. A metre is 3.2808 feet, so it is tempting to treat a square metre as 3.28 square feet. It is not:
- 1 m² = 10.7639 ft² (3.280839895²)
- 1 ft² = 0.092903 m²
- 1 in² = 6.4516 cm²
An answer that is out by roughly a factor of 3.3 is nearly always this mistake. The same rule extends: volume cubes the factor, so 1 m³ is 35.315 ft³.
Acres and Hectares
Land is sold in units that predate the metric system, and both are worth knowing by feel rather than by factor:
- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² = 43,560 ft²
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m², a square 100 m on each side
- 1 hectare = 2.471 acres, so an acre is a little over 0.4 hectares
The acre is a medieval survivor: one chain (22 yards) by one furlong (220 yards), the area a team of oxen could plough in a day. That is why it is not a round number of anything. A football pitch is roughly 1.8 acres, or three quarters of a hectare.
Measuring Real Rooms and Plots
Actual spaces are rarely rectangles. Split an awkward shape into rectangles, triangles and part-circles, work out each piece, then add them and subtract voids such as a stairwell or a pond.
Two practical points follow. Measure in the unit you will buy in, since flooring is sold by the square metre and carpet often by the linear metre off a fixed-width roll. And add a waste allowance before ordering — around 10% for straight-laid flooring and tiles, more for diagonal patterns or a room with many cuts.

| 1 square yard | 0.836127 | 1 m² = 1.196 yd² |
| 1 acre | 4,046.86 | 1 hectare = 2.471 acres |
| 1 hectare | 10,000 | 1 km² = 100 hectares |
Frequently Asked Questions
- How many square feet are in a square metre?
- 10.7639 square feet. The linear factor of 3.280839895 is squared, which is why the answer is not 3.28.
- How big is an acre?
- 4,046.86 square metres, or 43,560 square feet. It originally described the area a team of oxen could plough in a day.
- How many acres are in a hectare?
- 2.471 acres. A hectare is 10,000 square metres, a square 100 metres on each side.
- Why is my area answer three times too small?
- Almost certainly a linear factor used where a squared one was needed. Multiplying by 3.28 instead of 10.76 gives an answer roughly 3.3 times short.
