Sleep Calculator
Waking mid-cycle is why eight hours can leave you groggier than seven and a half. Enter the time you need to wake, or the time you are going to bed, and this calculator works back in complete sleep cycles.
Formula
Bedtime = wake time − (cycles × 90 min) − 15 min to fall asleep
- A sleep cycle averages about 90 minutes
- Five or six cycles suits most adults
To wake at 07:00 after 5 cycles: 07:00 − 7h30m − 15m = 23:15
How the Times Are Worked Out
Sleep runs in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, and it takes most people about 14 minutes to fall asleep. Working back from your alarm:
Bedtime = Wake Time − (Cycles × 90 minutes) − 14 minutes
For a 7:00am alarm: 11:16pm gives five cycles (7.5 hours) and 9:46pm gives six (9 hours).
Why Waking Between Cycles Matters
Each cycle moves through light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Being woken out of deep sleep produces sleep inertia — the heavy, disoriented feeling that can last from fifteen minutes to over an hour.
The practical upshot: when time is short, finishing a cycle beats adding minutes. Six hours ending cleanly usually feels better than six hours forty ending mid-cycle.
The Limits of the Estimate
Ninety minutes is an average, not a rule. Real cycles run about 70 to 120 minutes, vary between people, and lengthen towards morning. If a suggested time keeps leaving you groggy, move your bedtime by fifteen minutes and try again for a week.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How many sleep cycles do I need?
- Five or six for most adults, which is 7.5 to 9 hours. Fewer than four regularly is associated with meaningful sleep debt.
- How long should it take to fall asleep?
- Around 10 to 20 minutes is typical. Consistently dropping off within five minutes usually signals sleep deprivation rather than good sleep habits.
- Does the 90-minute cycle apply to everyone?
- No. It is a population average; individual cycles range from about 70 to 120 minutes. Use the result as a starting point and adjust from how you feel.
- Why am I still tired after eight hours?
- Often because the alarm landed mid-cycle, but caffeine late in the day, alcohol fragmenting REM, and untreated conditions such as sleep apnoea are all common causes worth ruling out.
